The criticism over Melania Trump’s wardrobe selection for the UN speech isn’t anything I thought was worth getting excited over. Admittedly the dress isn’t my preferred style and I wouldn’t have worn it, the real story about Melania Trump’s UN speech should have been on the content.
As reported by Opposing Views:
In her speech, Melania called on parents and the international community to “come together for the good of our children because through them, our future will be defined,” according to Politico.
“No child should ever feel hungry, stalked, frightened, terrorized, bullied, isolated or afraid, with nowhere to turn,” said Melania during her speech at the luncheon, which was attended by spouses of world leaders including Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s wife, Sophie Gregoire-Trudeau; French first lady Brigitte Macron; and Turkish first lady Emine Erdogan.
“We need to step up, come together, and ensure that our children’s future is bright,” said Melania.
“We must teach each child the values of empathy and communication that are at the core of the kindness, mindfulness, integrity, and leadership which can only be taught by example,” said the first lady. “By our own example, we must teach children to be good stewards of the world they will inherit.”
While her words were honest, heartfelt and enduring, her message against bullying and teaching kindness, integrity and the values of empathy are not resonating with many Americans when her husband, the President, Donald Trump, doesn’t mirror those qualities himself. Instead, she tolerates his actions and behavior and stands by him for the most part in silence. Silence is seen as consent to many, especially when you’re in the public eye and hold such a high office or position of authority. Many children look up to adults, and persons of authority, especially their President as a moral authority. Unfortunately, the reputation and continuous childish behavior of Trump do not represent the best of the President of the United States of America.
Trump’s behavior towards others on Twitter and throughout the 2016 presidential campaign appalled many, including myself. Trump is the epitome of a cyber bully on Twitter. He lacks the discipline and empathy to ‘treat others as you’d want to be treated’, per the “Golden rule” Melania also spoke about.
Trump’s continuous childish tweets, retweets, and insults towards others do not reflect mindfulness, integrity, and the kind of kindness anyone should have, especially that of the leader of the greatest nation on Earth. Instead, his moral authority is seen as a joke, hypocritical, embarrassing and insulting to many.
Melania Trump’s speech may have been overshadowed by her outfit to many on Twitter or those in the media, but the content and meaningfulness of her speech also fell on deaf ears for many because of the behavior and hypocrisy of her husband.
In result, it’s difficult for many to take First Lady Melania Trump seriously when she can’t even convince her husband to treat others like he(or they) would want to be treated. Instead, ironically, Trump lashes out at the media and anyone else who disagrees with him and he bullies them, treats them with disrespect and insults others while expecting others to respect him.
Sorry, Mr. Trump, that’s not how things normally work and just because you’re the leader of the greatest country on Earth it doesn’t mean you’ve earned the respect of the Office of the President.
What do you think is more important, what Melania Trump wears or her message and the hypocrisy of her husband, Donald Trump?
